Materia by AudioThing is an additive re-synthesizer that turns any sample into a deeply playable instrument. Load a sound and it breaks it down into harmonic partials, each with its own frequency, amplitude, phase, and complex envelope. You can then reshape the spectrum, redraw how individual partials evolve over time, and add resonant material models, filtering, and modulation. Play the result polyphonically while keeping the original character or pushing it into entirely new sonic territory. The partial spectrum is the heart of the instrument: select any partial to adjust its ratio, level, and phase, or edit its 128-point envelope with editable duration and sustain loop points. Advanced Analysis gives partials independent envelopes, while Add Empty Partials lets you draw in new flavours from silence. A flexible filter (low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, notch, formant) and four effects—algorithmic resonator, tap echo, multi-stage phaser, and waveshaper—complete the toolkit.
