PartialString is a free physical modelling synth that recreates plucked string sounds using real-time finite-difference time-domain simulation. Instead of samples, it calculates how vibrations travel along a virtual string, letting you set the excitation position and shape (both velocity-sensitive) and choose where a pickup captures the sound. An LFO can sweep the pickup position, even into audio-rate territory for AM-like sidebands. Decay time is adjustable, with optional dampers that can close when a note ends—combine long undamped decay with low accuracy for soft, inharmonic pads. Up to 10 voices are available, but polyphony adapts to your CPU and string length; low notes may behave monophonically on weaker machines. Accuracy can be fixed or scaled with string length, and an option prevents or octave-shifts overly demanding low notes during real-time play. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux in VST3 and AU formats. Ideal for hobby producers exploring physical modelling, ambient textures, or plucked instrument emulation in FL Studio, Ableton, or Logic.
