Helm is a free, open-source software synthesizer that works as a standalone instrument or as a plugin in VST, VST3, AU, and LV2 formats on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It offers 32-voice polyphony and a visual interface that gives real-time feedback on your modulation routing. The synth engine includes two oscillators with cross modulation and up to 15 unison voices each, plus a sub oscillator with shuffle waveshaping and oscillator feedback/saturation for extra harmonic character. You get 12 waveforms and a filter that blends between 12 dB and 24 dB low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass modes, along with low/band/high shelf filters. Modulation options are deep: two monophonic LFOs, one polyphonic LFO, a step sequencer, and sources like polyphonic aftertouch. A simple arpeggiator and effects such as formant filter, stutter, delay, distortion, and reverb round out the package. Helm is aimed at hobby producers and sound designers who want a flexible, hands-on synth for electronic music, ambient textures, and experimental patches without spending money. It runs smoothly in FL Studio, Ableton Live, and Logic Pro on Windows and Mac.
