Retromulator is a free plugin that runs classic hardware synths and samplers at the chip level, not as samples or approximations. It emulates eleven machines, including the Yamaha DX7, Access Virus series, Clavia Nord Lead 2X, Roland JP-8000, Waldorf microQ and Microwave XT, Commodore 64 SID, Akai S1000, Wurlitzer 200A, and Yamaha OPL3. The DSP-based synths execute original ROM firmware on a cycle-accurate Motorola DSP 56300, while the DX7 uses its actual Hitachi HD6303R sub-CPU and Yamaha EGS/OPS chipset. The Wurlitzer is a physical model, the OPL3 uses Nuked OPL3, the SID runs reSID, and the Akai S1000 uses the SFZero engine. You supply your own ROM firmware or sample banks by placing them in the designated folder; the plugin loads them on next launch. It is aimed at hobby producers and retro enthusiasts who want authentic hardware behavior in their DAW. Runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux in VST, VST3, AU, AAX, and standalone formats. Requires AVX2-capable CPU and 8 GB RAM.
