discoDSP OB-Xd 1.4 is a free virtual analog synthesizer inspired by the Oberheim OB-X. It aims to capture the character of that hardware while adjusting parts of the design for software use. Subtle random variations in tuning help create the rich, slightly unsettled sound associated with vintage analog synths.
Its continuously variable multimode filter offers flexible tone shaping, with 12 dB operation and a 24 dB mode that allows blending between four-pole and one-pole responses. Rather than including every production tool inside the instrument, OB-Xd relies on its host for functions such as automation, transposition, layering and arpeggiation. There are no built-in effects, so you can shape the finished sound with your preferred chorus, delay or reverb plugins.
This Windows version includes both 32-bit and 64-bit builds. Version 1.4 adds bank and skin browsing through a right-click on the interface, along with community-created skins and a Japanese manual. It suits hobby producers looking for an Oberheim-inspired software synth to use in a compatible VST host such as FL Studio or Ableton Live.
