SynthEdit is a standalone modular audio development environment for Windows that lets you build custom software instruments and effects. Rather than starting with a fixed synthesizer layout, you arrange individual modules and wire their inputs and outputs together using virtual cables. It suits hobby producers and sound designers who want to explore synthesis or create tools tailored to their own workflow.
You can experiment with virtual analog sounds, frequency modulation, phase distortion and sampling, or assemble a dedicated drum synth or audio processor. Existing VST instruments and effects can also become part of your designs, with flexible routing between components.
For testing and performance, SynthEdit supports MIDI keyboard input, MIDI file playback, WAV playback and live audio processing. Multichannel audio recording and playback to disk are included too. Its plugin export workflow lets you turn finished designs into instruments or effects for use outside the builder. For this Windows edition, VST3 is the relevant export format for compatible hosts such as FL Studio and Ableton Live. SynthEdit itself runs separately from your DAW.
