Arturia SQ80 V is a software synthesizer based on the Ensoniq SQ80, combining the grainy tone of vintage digital oscillators with an emulated analog filter and output stage. It suits producers looking for retro synth colors, warm lo-fi textures, sharp digital tones, or more abrasive industrial sounds.
At its core is a model of the 8-bit 5503 DOC chip, giving the instrument a different character from cleaner digital synths. Its sound-design options extend beyond the original hardware, with instrument-style attack transients, hidden waveforms, and VFX transwaves available alongside a broad range of waveform combinations. These ingredients let you explore smooth, restrained patches as well as rougher, harmonically busy sounds.
The interface is designed to make this hybrid synthesis approach easier to explore without getting lost in programming. For hobby producers working in FL Studio or Ableton Live on Windows, SQ80 V offers a VST3 instrument for adding distinctive ’80s-inspired timbres to modern tracks. A standalone format is also listed for use outside a DAW.
