Audacity is a standalone, open-source audio editor and recorder for Windows, macOS and Linux, rather than a VST plugin. Its multitrack workspace lets you capture microphones, mixers and compatible audio devices, then edit and combine recordings with imported files. Use it to trim samples, layer overdubs, digitize older recordings or prepare audio for your next production session. Windows users can also record computer playback through WASAPI loopback. Support for 16-bit, 24-bit and 32-bit floating-point samples makes it useful for a range of recording and editing tasks, while level meters and waveform clipping displays help you keep an eye on signal levels. Import and export options include WAV, AIFF, MP3, FLAC and Ogg Vorbis, with additional formats available through the optional FFmpeg library. Audacity suits hobby producers and musicians who want a practical companion to their main DAW.
