Samplebrain is a free standalone application created by Dave Griffiths and Aphex Twin that lets you reinterpret sounds by mashing them together. It works by chopping your source audio into small segments called blocks, then building a ‘brain’—a network of these blocks connected by similarity. When you feed it a target sample, it analyzes that sample the same way and matches each block to one in its brain, playing back the matched sound in real time. This means you can use one sound to ‘play’ another, creating unusual textures and transformations. The workflow is straightforward: load a set of short WAV files into the brain, generate the brain, load a target loop, generate its blocks, and press play. You can then tweak numerous parameters to shape the result. The default block size is set high to avoid CPU glitches, but 500–1000 is a better range for most uses. Larger files like full tracks can be processed, though it takes time; once processed, they can be saved as brain files for instant reloading. Samplebrain is aimed at hobby music producers and sound designers looking for a unique tool to generate new sounds from existing audio. It runs on Windows and macOS as a standalone application, not a VST plugin.
