Retromulator is a free multi-synth plugin that recreates classic hardware instruments through low-level emulation rather than approximation. The virtual analog synths run on a cycle-accurate Motorola DSP 56300 processor, the Yamaha DX7 uses a full emulation of its original Hitachi HD6303R sub-CPU and Yamaha YM21280/YM21290 chip set, and the Akai S1000 sampler runs on the SFZero v3.0.0 engine with 8-point sinc interpolation. It supports SF2, SFZ, ZBP, and ZBB sample banks, plus MIDI CC control for mod wheel, volume, expression, pan, sustain, and pitch bend. The plugin covers the Access Virus A, B, C, and TI series, Clavia Nord Lead 2X, Roland JP-8000, and more, each executing authentic firmware or sample data. You load ROM firmware from your own hardware or sample banks from your library into the designated folder, and Retromulator handles the rest. It is aimed at hobby producers and retro-sound enthusiasts using FL Studio, Ableton, or Logic on Windows, macOS, or Linux who want the character of early 80s to 2000s hardware inside their DAW.
