Audible Planets is a free semi-modular synthesizer that uses a unique ‘Orbital Modulation’ engine inspired by quasi-Ptolemaic astronomy. Instead of traditional oscillators, four bodies revolve in circular motion, and the terminal bodies act as sound sources. The relative speeds of revolution correspond to carrier and modulator frequencies, similar to FM synthesis, but with a distinct character. You can adjust coarse and fine frequency ratios to create timbres ranging from pure and simple to densely inharmonic. The plugin includes a modulation matrix with monophonic and polyphonic modulation for most parameters, plus built-in effects chains. Version 1.1.5 adds mono LFO source buttons and switches oscillator volume and envelope sustain to logarithmic scaling—existing presets need conversion using the included Python script. It is available in VST3 and AU formats for Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it suitable for hobby producers using FL Studio, Ableton, or Logic who want to explore expressive, experimental synthesis without cost.
