SPARTA is a free, open-source VST plugin suite for building, monitoring and analysing spatial audio mixes. Developed primarily by Aalto University’s Acoustics Lab, it gives producers and audio researchers tools for positioning sources, working with Ambisonics and adapting immersive recordings for headphones or loudspeaker arrays.
The collection includes Ambisonic encoding and decoding up to seventh order, binaural panning, frequency-dependent Ambisonic compression and microphone-array encoding. Several processors handle up to 64 channels, while the binaural tools offer SOFA file loading and OSC-based head tracking. A shoebox room simulator, multichannel decorrelation, convolution processors and sound-field visualisation add options for experimenting with acoustic spaces and inspecting directional audio.
The installer also bundles COMPASS, HO-DirAC, the CroPaC Binaural Decoder and the HO-SIRR room impulse response renderer. These extend the package with signal-dependent spatial processing.
SPARTA suits hobby producers exploring immersive sound as well as engineers handling multichannel recordings. For Windows users, it is a specialist spatial-audio toolkit rather than a conventional stereo effect; check your VST host’s channel-routing capabilities before planning a larger Ambisonic session.
