SPARTA is a free, open-source VST plugin suite for building, monitoring and analysing spatial audio. Developed primarily at Aalto University’s Acoustics Lab in Finland, it brings together tools for Ambisonics, binaural headphone playback and multichannel speaker systems. It suits producers exploring immersive mixes, sound designers working with directional audio, and researchers testing spatial processing workflows.
The collection includes Ambisonic encoding, decoding and dynamic range compression with support for up to seventh order. You can position multiple sources, decode a sound field for a custom loudspeaker layout, or monitor through headphones using binaural processing. The binaural panner and Ambisonic binaural decoder include SOFA loading and OSC-based head tracking.
Other processors cover microphone-array encoding, beamforming, sound-field visualisation, multichannel decorrelation and convolution. A shoebox room simulator models multiple sources and Ambisonic receivers using the image-source method. The installer also bundles COMPASS, HO-DirAC, CroPaC Binaural Decoder and the HO-SIRR room impulse response renderer.
For Windows users, SPARTA offers a specialised spatial audio toolkit; check your VST host’s channel-routing capabilities before planning complex multichannel sessions.
