Steinberg Backbone is a drum design instrument for producers who want to build custom kicks, snares, hi-hats, percussion and transition sounds from samples. It suits hobby beatmakers and sound designers looking to reshape existing recordings rather than rely only on finished drum hits.

Combine up to eight sample layers, sculpt them with subtractive synthesis, or separate a sound into tonal and noise components for independent processing. Re-synthesis lets you transform both one-shots and loops, while up to eight effects across two fully routable buses provide further shaping options.

For clip-based workflows in FL Studio or Ableton Live, Backbone can export audio directly, including individual layers via drag and drop. Version 1.1 adds 250 presets covering snares, claps, hi-hats, toms and other drum sounds. It also introduces an option to export the last played note automatically, linked movement of sample or loop boundaries, and an adjustable gain offset after normalization.

Improved stereo re-synthesis and Windows display scaling in 25% increments round out the update. This Windows listing is suited to compatible VST3 or AAX hosts.
