Things – Motor by AudioThing is a morphing rotor effect that turns two audio signals into an evolving, interlocking texture. Using sidechain input and a variable-shape LFO, it moves between gentle blends, rhythmic chopping and extreme audio-rate modulation with ring-modulation-like overtones. Synced vibrato and panning add pitch and stereo movement, while analogue-style sound shaping and adjustable motor start/stop timing give transitions extra character. Try it on sustained synths, contrasting loops or experimental sound layers when static parts need motion or a more unpredictable edge. Developed in collaboration with Hainbach, Motor takes inspiration from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop’s Crystal Palace switching device, translating its unusual approach into a modern production effect. It suits electronic producers, ambient musicians and sound designers who enjoy anything from subtle animation to abrasive, restless textures.
