RipplerX is a free, open-source physically modelled synthesizer built around modal synthesis, the same technique behind acoustic-style instruments that ring, resonate and decay like real materials. It began as a research project into physically modelled drums and grew into a full synth heavily informed by AAS Chromaphone and Saike’s Partials, with controls and models that closely mirror those designs. On top of that foundation it adds its own controls for Inharmonicity and model Ratio, giving it a distinct tonal character. Expect mallet-like tones, bell and marimba textures, resonant percussion, plucked timbres and unusual metallic hybrids rather than classic subtractive sounds. It runs as VST3 and AU on Windows, macOS and Linux, making it a practical option for producers curious about physical modelling without spending money. It suits hobby producers, sound designers and anyone looking for organic, struck and resonant textures to layer into electronic, ambient or cinematic tracks. Because it is open source, it also offers developers and researchers a readable entry point into modal synthesis techniques.
