Wildergarden Audio MAIM is a free distortion effect that turns MP3 encoding artifacts into a sound-design tool. Instead of emulating analog saturation, it manipulates the internal behavior of two real MP3 encoders while audio plays, producing anything from recognizable compression damage to extreme spectral distortion and unpredictable digital glitches.

It suits hobby producers and sound designers who want rough digital textures rather than conventional overdrive. Use it to explore degraded tones, add glitch character to a track, or push an audio signal into more abstract territory. Its controls support smooth adjustment and automation, so you can change the processing during playback without introducing pops or gaps from parameter movement.

MAIM is available as a VST3 plugin for Windows and Linux, with both AU and VST3 versions for macOS. That makes it an option for compatible hosts such as FL Studio and Ableton Live, plus Logic Pro on Mac. The plugin is open source under GPL v3.0, allowing use and modification, with redistribution governed by the same license.
