Black Diamond Probe is a free analysis tool that captures the distortion character of real hardware and software gain stages. Run audio through a tube preamp, fuzz pedal, or overdrive plugin, and Probe fits a transfer curve to the input and sidechain signals. The resulting .tfunc file can be loaded into Black Diamond Distortion to reuse, refine, or push further. Version 1.1 adds real-time visualization: overlaid time-domain waveforms help you match levels and spot clipping, while an XY oscilloscope plots input against output so you can see whether a device will capture cleanly before committing. The plugin works best with memoryless devices—most distortion, saturation, and waveshaping circuits—though it can also visualize time-dependent behavior like hysteresis as loops or smear. Ideal for hobby producers using FL Studio, Ableton, or Logic who want to learn what their gear is actually doing and build a personal library of distortion curves.
