Grainferno by Baby Audio is a granular instrument that turns any audio file into a playable synth voice. Its grain engine breaks samples into tiny fragments and rebuilds them into new textures, from smooth tonal clouds to experimental digital noise. At audio-rate speeds, grains act like oscillators while retaining the source’s spectral character, letting you build tuned synth tones from your own samples. Two independent source files can be morphed in real time using seven modes, and per-grain effects shape each fragment at the point of generation. Nearly every parameter supports drag-and-drop modulation from three envelopes, three LFOs, and three random generators, including cross-modulation between modulators. It suits hobby producers and sound designers making hybrid instruments, drones, and textures. Drop in any sample and explore evolving, playable sound design.
