Native Instruments FREAK is a modulation effect for turning familiar recordings into unstable voices, metallic textures, and grainy radio-style sounds. Its three modulation types draw on amplitude modulation, ring modulation, and frequency shifting, giving producers ways to introduce noise and inharmonic detail into otherwise tonal material.
Use it to push vocals toward a detuned horror character, add a hard metallic edge to melodic parts, or explore rhythmic sidechain effects. Radio mode uses demodulation to evoke aged broadcasts and strange transmission-like textures, making it useful when a clean recording needs a deliberately degraded character. Stereo modulation adds another dimension to the processing and is especially suited to percussion.
FREAK suits hobby producers and sound designers who want to reshape existing audio rather than generate a new instrument sound. It can serve as a lo-fi treatment or a more pronounced sound-design effect, depending on the material and the result you want. This Windows release is version 1.2.1.
