AudioThing Reels is a lo-fi tape emulation plugin that brings the battered character of a vintage Japanese reel-to-reel recorder to your tracks. Rather than polished mastering warmth, it delivers rough saturation, restricted bandwidth and the unpredictable flaws of aging consumer tape. Three modeled quarter-inch tape types offer different frequency responses and distortion characteristics, ranging from unused old stock to heavily worn tape. Wow and flutter introduce pitch drift, while ducking, stereo crosstalk, hiss and motor noise recreate an imperfect recording chain. A built-in echo section extends those textures into repeats, and adjustable tape-start and tape-stop effects create rising or falling pitch transitions with fades. Reels suits producers looking to weather drum loops, soften pristine synths or give samples a scruffy retro feel. It is a character effect for deliberately imperfect mixes, not transparent tape processing.
