RipplerX is a free, open-source physically modelled synthesizer that recreates the behaviour of acoustic instruments through modal synthesis. It offers two resonators that can be coupled in serial or parallel, and nine resonator models: String, Beam, Squared, Membrane, Drumhead, Plate, Marimba, Open tube, and Closed tube. Shape your sound with inharmonicity, tone, ratio, and material controls, and excite the resonators using built-in noise and mallet generators. Each resonator supports up to 64 partials, giving you detailed control over the harmonic content. The plugin is inspired by commercial instruments like AAS Chromaphone and Ableton Collision, but adds its own character and extra parameters. It is available in VST3 and AU formats for Windows and macOS, and it is lightweight at around 29 MB. RipplerX is ideal for hobby producers who want to explore physical modelling without spending money, and for anyone looking for an introduction to modal synthesis. It works well for creating drums, mallets, bells, and other acoustic-style sounds in FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and other DAWs.
