u-he Protoverb is a free experimental reverb plugin that creates room-like ambience by modelling resonances in the air, rather than concentrating on reflections from walls. Instead of suppressing those resonances, it lets them accumulate, producing a space that responds noticeably to the notes you play.

Sustained sounds gradually excite the simulated room, while short melodic phrases can leave faint, echo-like traces. Multiple instruments can retain their individual character within the reverb instead of merging into an indistinct background. This makes Protoverb worth exploring for hobby producers who want natural-sounding space with unusual behaviour on melodies, sustained parts or layered arrangements.

Its room design is controlled by a two-part text code: one section determines the internal network, and the other supplies a random seed for parameter choices. You can edit the code directly or randomise either section independently to explore different results. Version 1.0.1 also includes a preset browser.
