UNNKS v0.2.5 is a Windows command-line utility for extracting data from NKS and NKX archives used by Kontakt and other music synthesis software. It is intended for producers who need to inspect or unpack sample-library archives, as well as developers working with these file types. Unlike an audio plugin, it operates outside your DAW rather than processing sound or playing instruments.
Its commands follow a GNU tar-style structure, with options to list archive contents, extract files, and choose an output directory. The package also includes nks-scan for examining archive structure and nks-ls-libs for finding installed sample packages and displaying their NKX encryption keys. Developers can use the included libnks library to add archive access to GPLv3+ software, although its programming interface may change.
NKX compatibility depends on package-specific encryption keys and the utility’s supported-library database, so not every archive is supported. UNNKS only reads and extracts existing archives; it cannot create new ones. Input must be a seekable file, not standard input or another non-seekable stream.
