Six Sines is a free, open-source FM synthesizer built around audio-rate modulation, including phase modulation and digital ring modulation. Its six operators, called sources, can output audio or modulate themselves and later operators, with a mod matrix offering through-zero linear FM, exponential FM, and multiple ring modulation scaling modes. Each source can also run an extended mode such as phase-remap distortion, a resonant sweep, or a noise generator, and operator 1 can use the plugin’s sidechain input as its source. What makes it stand out is the modulation architecture: every knob is a node with its own envelope and LFO per voice, so operators, modulation amounts, feedback, and levels can all be shaped independently. Version 1.2 turns macros into full per-voice modulators, called SuperMacros. It runs as VST3, CLAP, and AU on Windows, macOS, and Linux. If you use FL Studio, Ableton Live, or Logic and want a deep, flexible FM synth to explore, Six Sines is a capable free option.
