VariSpeed is a free tape delay plugin from GSi that recreates the WEM Copicat IC400 Belt Drive, a late-1970s tape echo unit. The original hardware was notable for being the first WEM echo machine with a DC capstan motor, allowing the tape speed to be varied and therefore the delay time to be adjusted. GSi’s digital version models the unit as it is, including its quirks, and adds MIDI control for the variable speed parameter. It is a straightforward echo effect rather than a modern multi-mode delay, so it suits producers who want the character and instability of a vintage belt-driven tape echo in their mixes. The plugin is available in 64-bit VST2, VST3 and AU formats for Windows and macOS, plus a standalone version. It works in any DAW that supports these formats, including FL Studio, Ableton Live and Logic Pro. Because it is free and lightweight at 17 MB, it is an easy addition for hobbyists looking to add a touch of retro tape echo to guitars, vocals or synths.
