SQ8L is a free emulation of the Ensoniq SQ-80 synthesizer, originally a 32-bit Windows-only VST by Siegfried Kullmann. This 64-bit port rebuilds it from the original binary so it runs on modern Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), and Linux. The sound engine is bit-exact: every DSP module, from the DOC 5503 oscillators to the filter and envelopes, produces identical samples to the original, verified across all 168 factory programs and thousands of interactions. The editor is pixel-exact, using the original artwork and drawing logic. It loads the same 512 programs and chunk format, so old projects sound the same, and it reads/writes .8XL libraries and SQ-80/ESQ-1 SysEx. Added conveniences include zoom up to 300%, MTS-ESP microtuning support, and native OS dialogs. It is aimed at hobby producers and retro synth enthusiasts using FL Studio, Ableton, or Logic who want the classic SQ-80 sound in a modern 64-bit host.
