Steinberg Backbone is a drum design instrument for producers who want to build custom percussion from samples rather than rely on finished drum hits. It suits hobby beatmakers and sound designers working on kicks, snares, hi-hats, percussion, rises and impact sounds.
Each sound can combine up to eight sample layers, giving you room to blend different attacks, bodies and textures. Subtractive synthesis tools let you reshape those layers, while sample decomposition separates tonal content from noise. That makes it possible to work on the pitched and noisy parts of a drum independently. Re-synthesis provides another way to transform the original sample material and explore variations beyond straightforward layering.
For further processing, Backbone includes up to eight effects and two fully routable buses, so you can arrange how your layered sounds pass through the effects. Its interface is designed for quick editing, making it useful for both refining an existing hit and developing a new sound from several sources. This Windows version is aimed at sample-based drum creation and detailed percussion shaping.
